Living with keratoconus or another irregular corneal condition can make clear, comfortable vision difficult to achieve. Glasses may no longer provide enough correction, and standard contact lenses can feel unstable or fail to deliver consistent clarity.
At Dussan Eye Care in Long Island City, we fit customized scleral lenses for patients with complex corneal conditions. By creating a smooth optical surface over an irregular cornea, these specialty lenses can provide clearer and more stable vision when traditional correction falls short.
The cornea is normally smooth and rounded, allowing light to focus properly inside the eye. With keratoconus, the cornea gradually becomes thinner and develops a cone-like shape. Other conditions, injuries, surgeries, or corneal scarring can also create an irregular surface.
When the cornea is uneven, light does not focus uniformly. Patients may experience blurred or distorted vision, glare, halos, increased astigmatism, or frequent prescription changes.
Standard glasses can correct refractive error, but they cannot reshape the irregular surface of the cornea. Regular soft contacts may also conform to that uneven shape instead of masking it.
Scleral lenses are larger rigid gas-permeable lenses that vault over the cornea rather than resting directly on it. The edges of the lens sit on the sclera, which is the white portion of the eye.
Before insertion, the space beneath the lens is filled with preservative-free saline. This creates a fluid reservoir between the lens and cornea while the rigid front surface provides a smooth optical system.
For many patients with irregular corneas, this design can produce sharper and more consistent vision than conventional contacts.
At our Long Island City practice, scleral lenses may be considered for patients with conditions such as:
A specialty contact lens evaluation is necessary to determine whether scleral lenses are appropriate for your individual eyes.
Scleral lenses are not one-size-fits-all contacts. The shape of an irregular cornea can vary significantly from one patient to another, so precise measurements and careful fitting are essential.
During the fitting process, we evaluate the shape of your eyes, prescription, visual needs, and how the lens aligns with the ocular surface. Follow-up appointments allow us to evaluate vision, comfort, and lens positioning and make refinements when necessary.
Dussan Eye Care also offers advanced EyePrint®PRO prosthetic scleral lenses for certain complex cases. These lenses use highly individualized measurements to create a design matched closely to the contours of the eye.
Although scleral lenses are larger than conventional contacts, many patients find them comfortable because the lenses vault over the sensitive cornea and rest on the less sensitive scleral tissue.
The fluid reservoir beneath the lens can also keep the corneal surface continuously hydrated while the lens is worn. This may be especially useful when an irregular corneal condition occurs alongside significant ocular surface dryness.
Learning to insert, remove, and properly care for scleral lenses takes some practice. Our team provides instructions and follow-up care to help patients become comfortable managing their customized lenses.
